Centennial Issue
Eos’s December issue featured 10 unique covers that, when placed together create a full custom illustration. The illustration featured iconography of each geoscience field Eos covered during AGU’s Centennial year, drawn together as a “100.” In addition to the 10 unique covers, the illustration was included as a poster tipped in to each issue, and as displays at AGU’s annual conference.
The design and execution received a 2020 Gold Award from the Hermes Creative Awards, and a 2020 AIGA50 award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts DC Chapter.
The process
First I explored the concept of how to break the “100” across multiple cover versions while highlighting the 10 Centennial themes Eos had covered in 2019.
Once we had an overall idea, we contracted illustrator Ellen Schofield to bring the concept to life. Ellen explored different illustration styles before settling on the final illustration seen below.
